Ryan Lanz is an American writer who has recently published his second book “The Idea Factory: 1,000 Story Ideas and Writing Prompts to Find Your Next Bestseller”. As usual, Hidden Jewels will talk about his trajectory during this first post and an interview to him will be published short after. We encourage our readers to ask by commenting any questions they may like to be answered by Ryan. Those commenting will participate in a give away where 3 randomly picked winners will receive a digital copy of Ryan’s new book!
Born and raised on the Hawaiian island of Oahu Ryan Lanz lived there until he was a teenager. At that young age he had his first contact with writing by publishing a mystery/murder novel as a series of chapters. As all beginnings are, this was a modest first contact with the writing world but it was already enough to trap Ryan into the sensation of knowing that someone anticipated the next chapter that he wrote.
Being a teenager Ryan moved to California, where he lived during 7 years. The opportunities that the inland USA offered to him made him enjoy different experiences with the art world during this period. He had a small appearance as an extra for the movie American Beauty, there he witnessed first hand the magic of the smoke and mirrors that the filming companies use to create a certain impression on the screen. Short after he became a member of the Southern California music group “The young americans”, where he acted as a vocalist and also had a first contact with dancing. Touring with them he visited a dozen countries on three continents over the length of five years. Amazing enough the group, which has been around since the 60’s, is formed by people of age ranging from 17 to 22 years. So when Ryan reached 22 he moved on.
The writing attempts that Ryan did during this period included some brainstorming for novels, poetry and riddles but were largely put it aside, waiting for a better occasion to exploit his writing skills. That occasion arrived in 2013. Having an increasing audience following his blog A Writer’s Path, where he writes about writing culture and brings on guest authors to share their writing tips, Ryan decided to give them something to read while he was completing a full-length fantasy novel (which is being edited at this time).
Ryan decided to write a short horror story, Unknown Sender, and it became his first serious attempt of writing that got published. Unknown Sender tells the story of Jessica, whose world revolves around studying at college and affording prepackaged meals, which leaves little time for socializing. In fact, she is quite content without being noticed, which only makes the attention of a mystery texter all the more unwanted. This person knows things about her. Things beyond just an average stalker.
After publishing Unknown Sender and knowing that everyone struggles at some point with creating ideas, he wrote a book to help those writers staring at a blank computer screen. The book was published last month, a relatively short nonfiction on generating story ideas and writing prompts: The Idea Factory: 1,000 Story Ideas and Writing Prompts to Find Your Next Bestseller.
Ryan lives currently in the Midwest of the United States where, although he is not a full-time writer, he plans continue writing and publishing novels, and eventually a series. One of them is the fantasy novel that is being edited at this time and that will be the largest work of Ryan: although it’s to be determined how long it will be after editing, it will certainly be over 100k. This novel will tell the story of a city in the Victorian age, not only struggling with the transition into electricity and new technology but the revolution boiling under their noses.
We will discuss in more depth about it as well as the other books during the interview to come where Ryan will answer the questions that our readers may have. But that is not all, as we said 3 people will be randomly selected among those commenting to receive a free digital copy of The Idea Factory: 1,000 Story Ideas and Writing Prompts to Find Your Next Bestseller!
